Finding Your School Board When You Move to the GTA
Four school boards, plus two Catholic alternatives
The GTA public education system is divided geographically into four school boards. The Toronto District School Board covers the City of Toronto and serves the largest student population. York Region District School Board covers York Region. Peel District School Board covers Peel Region. Durham District School Board covers Durham Region. In addition, each region has a Catholic school board providing Catholic education to families who request it.
Knowing which board serves a neighbourhood is the first step. The second step, for families with school-age children, is understanding the catchment area for the specific school you are interested in.
How catchments work
Most school boards use geographical catchments to assign students to elementary and secondary schools. If your home falls within the catchment for a particular school, your child can attend that school. If it falls outside, you may have the option to request a transfer, but there is no guarantee of acceptance.
Catchments change. When a new school opens, the board redraws the catchment map. When enrolment grows in one area and drops in another, boundaries shift. If a school you want is currently outside your catchment, that circumstance may change, but do not count on it.
The solution is to check the catchment before you make an offer. Most school boards publish interactive maps on their websites showing which schools serve which addresses. Enter your address and you get an immediate answer. It takes five minutes and it can change the entire house-hunting decision.
Secondary schools and choice within TDSB
The Toronto District School Board operates differently from the other three boards. TDSB secondary students do not automatically attend the school in their catchment. Instead, TDSB runs a choice-based system where families rank their school preferences and the board makes the assignment based on your ranking and available space.
This system gives Toronto families more agency but it also introduces uncertainty. Your first-choice school may be full. Your assignment may be to a school further from home. The process is worth understanding if you are moving to Toronto and you have a secondary-school-age child.
Elementary students in TDSB still follow a catchment-based system, so there is less flexibility at the younger end. But secondary is where the choices expand.
The difference between public and Catholic boards
Both public and Catholic boards use catchments, but the Catholic boards have an additional requirement. To enrol in Catholic school, at least one parent or guardian must be a practising Catholic and willing to sign a declaration to that effect. If your family does not meet that requirement, the Catholic board is not an option regardless of catchment.
Catholic school standards, cultures, and academic reputations vary by board and by individual school, the same as public schools do. Do not assume all Catholic schools are equivalent or that public school is equivalent to Catholic. Visit the schools, talk to current families, and look at the specific results.
If you are homeschooling or choosing independent school
The catchment system does not apply to you. Neither does the secondary choice system in TDSB. You are free to live anywhere in the GTA and send your child to whatever independent or private school you have selected. This opens up your neighbourhood options considerably.
The tradeoff is cost. Independent schools charge tuition. Some offer bursaries or scholarships based on need or merit, and it is worth asking. But if cost is not a constraint, independent school gives you complete freedom on where to live.
What to do before you fall in love with a house
The catchment question is not romantic or emotional. It is practical. If schools matter in your decision, check the catchment before you start viewing, not after you have already decided to make an offer.
The board websites make it easy. Toronto District School Board, York Region District School Board, Peel District School Board, and Durham District School Board all have online catchment finders. Enter the address and you get immediate confirmation of which school serves it.
If the schools are a deal-breaker and your first-choice school is not in the catchment, either choose a different neighbourhood or explore the independent school option. But know your constraint before you spend six months looking at houses you cannot actually choose.
